Not since Russell Crowe as the Spaniard, Maximus Decimus Aurelius, dragged his soldiers onto the fields at dawn to fight the Barbarians, have so many Spaniards been up so early. It's Half Marathon Day in Madrid and there's bright tights, shoes and tops as far as the eye can see.

It's a lovely park to have a race in too. The Parque de Retiro.

I got on the hop-on-hop-off bus and rode it once around to get my bearings, then got off and walked the route.
