Orginally founded as a Roman city, Barcelona is the capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain and Spain's second most populated city, with a population of 1.6 million although if you count it's extended urban area that population swells to around 4.7 million. It's the 7th most populous area in the Europen Union after Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr area, Berlin, and Milan.
It's particularly known for the architecture of Antoni Gaudi and for hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics.
