Istanbul - Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque

Hagia Sofia

The present Ayasofya is the third building of the same name to be built in the same place. The first Great Church serving as the cathedral for Emperor Constantius (Istanbul used to be called Constantinople) was constructed in 360. A riot in 404 burned it down. It was reconstructed in 415 it survived until 532 when a citizen revolt razed it to the ground to make way for a new church,
Hagia Sofia meaning Holy Wisdom was completed in 537. The Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed converted it to a mosque in 1453. It became a museum in 1935.

The Sultan Ahmet Mosque, built in 1616 is more popularly known as the Blue Mosque due to the blue tiles adorning the walls inside. With a kneeling capacity of 10,000 and a height of 43m it was built on the site of the palace of the Byzantine emperors, in front of the basilica Ayasofya.

The design is the culmination of two centuries Ottoman mosque development and incorporates some Byzantine Christian elements of the adjacent Ayasofya with traditional islamic architecture such as minarets. It is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period.

  1. Hi David
loving your photos. Bringing back a lot of memories of my own visit to Istanbul. And I think I will go home and watch the Indiana Jones Holy Grail movie again after your photos of Petra! But will have to book a trip to China and see Great Wall - then I will have ticked all the new 7 wonders too! See you when you get back to work.

  2. The scientific credentials of anyone working within food testing need to be underpinned with knowledge of the current and emerging regulations. This means keeping a breast of any changes to food quality standards. The all too recent horse meat scandal is a reminder of why food testing is needed with a global food supply chain. This technology enables people to do lots of outstanding achievement such as flying to the moon and discovering new star on the sky. However, there are two different opinions about technology. One side says that technology is the best tool to create simpler and easier lives while another side says that technology is harmful for the environment. In fact, those two different opinions are just to be true. Technology can be helpful but harmful at the other side. CAD for sale site

  6. It's a fashionista's worst experience, even worse than looking oversize buddy, more degrading than wearing the same dress in another party -- it's the fear of symbolizing looking yesteryear fashion trend model. Sometimes, fashion trends is considered as fads, are disreputably erratic. The fashion industry players are always on the quest to bring up something "NEW" & "HOT". Shapewear Bodysuit
